I Don't Have a Lot of Money But I Love to Travel - How Can I Travel For Cheap?

I've always loved to travel but have never really been able to do a lot of it until I started doing some research on ways to save money while on a vacation, or basically how to travel for cheap. Now, that does not mean I am a cheap or frugal person - far from it. I love buying the best of things but sometimes it's just not necessary when traveling. You can often find really great deals and also find ways to save money and it won't cause you to have less fun on your trip. In fact you can have a lot more fun because you'll be saving money on your travels so you'll have more money for shopping and souvenirs (my favorite part).

Let's face it, the flight itself can be a drain on your bank account. If you really want to travel for cheap you need to start with trying to find the lowest airfare possible. That means you need to spend some time before your trip scouring the online travel sites looking for those great deals. Don't wait till the last minute because you'll probably pay a lot more for your tickets. Try to start searching a month or two in advance.

If you are going to be visiting any theme parks, consider eating your main meals away from the parks and you'll save a bunch of money. The food inside the parks is much more expensive.

See if the hotel you are going to stay at offers any discounts. I once went to Cedar Point and found they had a special going on, and I ended up paying a lot less for my room PLUS I received a bunch of discount tickets.

Check with a travel agent to see if you can combine flight, hotel, and rental car, and even park tickets and get a better deal.

10 Things to Look for in Purchasing Discount Travel Club Memberships

As memberships in travel clubs, like Coastal Vacation Club and Prestige Travel Club increase, many are turning to lifetime travel memberships to save up to 74% off their travel for life.

Here is a list of 10 things to look out for if you are considering joining any vacation travel club.

1. Licensed and bonded travel vendors

Make sure your club uses licensed and bonded vendors. These are recognized by the state they do business in, and will make sure you are dealing with real and legit travel agencies who want to see your satisfaction as priority one.

2. No time share gimmicks, sales presentations or tours

Many vacation club vendors are veiled time-share pitch fests. You are required to attend long sales presentations just to use or activate some of the discount portions of your trips. Make sure tours are not required as a pre-requisite for activating a trip or staying in a condo.

3. Years in service

Vacation clubs can crop up in an instant by some "slick willy's" just to make a fast buck, and they sell you something that is not originally what it seemed and before you realize it and try to get your money back, they are gone, off to the next deal. So make sure you look closely to see if the Club has an established track record of industry credibility and integrity.

4. BBB Reports

Do your due diligence on the travel clubs, looking through scam reports and BBB reports. You'll find many independent agents represent the "mother" travel club and they can be unscrupulous, while the parent company acts responsibly, so take note that individual resellers might have a bad track record, while the parent company has a spot less record. Stay away from problematic vendors.

5. Terms and conditions of use: Holidays, Singles/married couples, blackout dates

Many travel clubs often limit availability to non-holidays, or have blackout days. One vendor I know of, for example, will not let you travel 7 days before or after a major holiday. Since there are major holidays almost every month, you are missing 14 days a month or around 160 days a year which are off-limits. So make sure you know the terms and conditions, age limits, and if those traveling must be 2 married couples or if the trips apply to singles.

6. One time membership fees

Some travel clubs will dock you a monthly fee, some will dock you a yearly renewal fee. Be careful of those who hit you hard upfront and then bleed your money slowly over time. Good travel clubs offer you a low, one time fee to get started and no further renewals or back end fee.

7. Variety of discount types

Does your travel club only offer 2 night 3 day trips? Or does it offer a lot more like unlimited week long condo stays, Unlimited discount cruises, ski discounts, dining discounts, or golf discounts? Make sure your travel club membership has many varieties of trips and vacation styles to fit all personality and travel types.

8. Location choices

Domestic membership or International. Does your travel club only cater to the USA or does it have benefits far and wide reaching into the best vacation destinations across the planet? Make sure you know the values for local or international experiences.

9. Education on how to consume membership

A good travel company will offer CD's, videos and literature to help their membership consume their club benefits and get the most out of taking their trips. If your travel club does not offer some training or help in showing you how to use your package, you might want to look else where.

10. Transferability

Will you be allowed to give away some of your trips in your travel club or will your name and address be hard coded into every voucher to only be used by you? Some travel clubs have over 40 trips included, and no one could use that many trips in one year. So make sure your travel club will allow you to transfer trips and packages to family and friends, with no extra costs and simple order fulfillment.

Traveling around the world as an exclusive travel club member can sure have it's money saving advantages, and for the more pricey clubs out there, like Coastal Vacations Club, for example, some people choose to share one membership among a small group and divide out the trip benefits.

How to Get to Tortola

Finding your way to Tortola from the U.S. can cost you time and money on your vacation. Don't let it cost you either one, check out the different options for arriving in Tortola (British Virgin Islands).

1. Decide on what the most important elements are for you. Are you looking to just save time? Or is money more important to you? Maybe they both are, or maybe neither one matters?

2. Find a flight. No commercial airliners fly to Tortola from the U.S. So your best bet is to hop on the cheapest flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU). However there are good flight options from Florida to St. Thomas (STT), which is a 50 minute ferry ride to Tortola.

3. Take the flight to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (STT). It will almost always be the cheapest option. You will only need to book one flight and have a cab get you to the ferry. The ferry ride cost between $25-$30 one-way. About an hour later you will either arrive in Road Town (the capital) or on the West End.

4. If you're in a hurry, expect additional travel. Getting there in a hurry requires an extra flight. Most of which come from San Juan (SJU). There are only a few airline options commercially, there are a handful more charter airlines available. The options will be listed in the tips section below.

5. Take a charter if in a hurry. Finding the quickest way to Tortola also happens to be the most expensive. You can catch a charter flight out of Ft. Lauderdale's executive airport (FXE) from Island Birds Charters.

6. Arrive. By air you will arrive on Beef Island (neighboring island just east of Tortola connected by a bridge) at the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport.

Commercial Airlines

* American Airlines

* Continental Airlines

* Cape Air

* Air Sunshine

Charter Airlines

* Cape Air (cheaper to take their commercial flight)

* Air Sunshine (cheaper to take their commercial flight)

* Bohlke International Airlines

* BVI Air Charters (AKA FlyBVI)

* Caribbean Wings

* Island Birds

If you end up taking the ferry over, don't buy the round-trip ticket. For an extra $5 on the way back you won't be tied down to waiting for the same ferry company you took when you arrived. There are many ferry companies coming and going all the time. So don't worry about being able to catch one, because they come all the time (unless it's past 5 pm). For more info, check out this ferry schedule.

Cheaper Flights to Cyprus

Cyprus has become a popular holiday destination for many travellers. With its fantastic climate and impressive resorts, it's not hard to see why the island attracts so many.

The range of options available on the island is impressive. Resorts range from the lively to the tranquil.

The Cypriot resort that seems to be in the news the most at the moment is that of Ayia Napa. Ayia Napa has become famous thanks to its nightlife and music scene.

As a result of its popularity, the town attracts artists and fans from all over Europe and from further afield. Some suggest that the resort is helping Ayia Napa to rival the Spanish island of Ibiza.

There is much more to Cyprus than its dance music scene. Many of the coastal resorts are extremely popular with families, boasting a full range of facilities and some glorious beaches.

Visitors are increasingly looking for added flexibility and are trying to find it by booking flights and hotels independently. If done correctly, such an approach can lead to real and significant savings.

The internet can, of course, be a great help when it comes to finding the best deals. With the ability to compare prices more easily than ever before, many consumers are taking advantage of online bookings to save large sums of money.

When you come to book a flight to Cyprus, remember that you'll get the cheapest flights by trying to take as flexible an approach as you possibly can.

If you can avoid the most popular travelling times then you could make substantial savings. This means that you should, for example, avoid travelling during the UK school summer holidays if you want the best prices.

By being flexible, there is no doubt that you can save on flights to the Mediterranean oasis that is Cyprus.

Travel Agencies - The Most Specialized, The Most Expensive

The discussion on how much a travel agency can get out of you is quite complicated but there are some rules that always apply and one of them is the following: the most specialized a travel agency is, the most money they will get from you.

This rule is not because specialized agencies love money more than others, as you can imagine. But the reason in fact is very simple. How many people can you expect to book through your services if you provide travel opportunities around the whole globe? And how many can you expect if you only plan Andorra trips? Providing that you do know about the existence of Andorra and where it is placed (just between Spain and France), the situation is obvious.

The amount of people interested in visiting Andorra probably is not comparable to the quantity of people looking to travel anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world. To go deeper into this topic, I will place here an example of my trip to New Zealand from Spain.

A travel agency in Spain specialized in New Zealand trips was offering myself a package for 1445 Euros (2095 US Dollars) which included flights and hiring a camper van during 28 days. That sounded like an impressive offer, specially after you do your first searches and you find it very difficult to find flights to New Zealand from Spain for less than 1500 euros.

Unfortunately, the first thing you see in the typical small letter is that airport taxes are not included and they estimate that these taxes can be around 250 euros. If we sum up, we have a total price for the agency offer of 1695 Euros (2457 dollars).

Then it comes the most crucial time on the life of the travel planner. Do you accept the proposition of the agency because they will do the job for your and you don't mind about the price? Or maybe you prefer to look deeper and try to find out if their option is really the cheapest as they claim?

Taking the second option, the way is tough. But it does give results, and my personal result was that I could get a combination of 2 flights for only 1002 Euros and adding the price for the camper van I got a total of 1270 Euros with all taxes included. If you find out the difference, you will realize that it is equal to 425 Euros.

Simply for taking the tough option, I saved 425 Euros (616 dollars) in my trip to New Zealand. And the question is... where was this money going instead? Yes, you know the answer.
