Flights - How to Pack Light?

Think about what you are going to be doing and then pack accordingly. Believe it or not I can bring some scuba gear and still get under the weight restriction on most Asia flights which can be as low as 15 kilos. If you go over you are going to pay, so pack light and save cash. Many people over think there travel packing for Asia, so in preparation for your next trip when you get back from this trip, do a critique on what you really used a lot in Asia, and what you did not.

1) What to bring

Start with the bag if you have an old clunky one you might want to invest in a new one, generally the more hardware the heavier. Try to have it so that your bag weighs less than 3 kilos. Many bags have extra bags that you can zip off I like for there to be one that I can use as a fanny back and the rest I don't need the extra hardware and straps which all add up. Generally canvas bags hold up well, they fold and bend which makes them easier to pack into taxis and what not and are light.

2) What not to bring

Pack twice and after the first pack get rid of half. Tee shirts and clothes in general are very cheap in Asia. I bring a couple of old ones and then dump them along the way and get new ones for back home and you can save on laundry as well!

Trust me you are not going to need a mossy net, tent or hammock. If you do need them buy them here in Bangkok used, there are always a few to be had in brand new, never been used condition for very cheap.

You want a hair dryer! You don't need one; humans for millennium did with out them, basically if it has a plug look at it twice.

3) What to buy when you get there

Toiletries can take up a lot of weight and they are a pain anyway as the security people are going to limit you to 100 ML or 4 OZ not very much wait till you get to your destination and then buy the bigger bottles which are very cheap in most Asia countries.

No jackets, sweaters or jeans in the travel bag. If you are going to bring them you need to wear them on the plane. I also wear my camera and other heavy stuff and I bring a stuff bag and shove it into the main bag when I can if I carried it on I put it in on the flight.

If you can't get that may I suggest a train or a boat!
